Birmingham International Airport
Birmingham International Airport was opened in the 30's to serve the needs of residents and industry in the surrounding area. When war broke out the government
requisitioned it for military purposes. However, it was returned to civilian use in 1946.
In the 50's flights to Belfast, Dublin, Glasgow and Edinburgh where introduced but the short runways limited the size of aircraft that could use them. During the 60's the runways was extended opening it up to longer distance flights. The construction of the nearby NEC in the 70's really put the facility on the map.
By the 80's a much needed new terminal was opened and the numbers of passengers it could handle increased. In time further improvements were made to the runways and long hall international destinations around the World were added to it's schedule.
The airport has two terminals which are connected by the Millennium link bridge.
Birmingham International Airport is approximately 6 miles from the centre of the city and is off junction 6 of the M42.
