Gatwick Airport
This is the second largest airport in the UK.
The name dates back to 1241 when a manor of that name stood where the airport is today. In 1890 the Manor was purchased by the Gatwick Race Course
Company, and a race course complete with its own railway station was built. In 1930 land alongside the racecourse was purchased for use as a small private
airfield.
Gatwick Airport in the form it currently exists was opened in 1958.
The facility is the busiest single runway airport in the world and has 2 terminals, a North and a South, which are linked by a swift monorail service, with the
journey time from one to the other taking about 2 minutes. The monorail is free to use and runs at least every six minutes, at busy periods every 3 minutes.
The complex is served by around 80 airlines and transports around 30 million passengers a year and offers flights to over 200 destinations.
Gatwick has always been at the cutting edge of things. Its first innovation was a direct link for passengers to the nearby rail station.
20 years later a covered pier from the terminal to aircraft stands was built, which has become a standard feature of aviation building design.
In both the North and South Terminals there are twenty four hour information desks on each arrivals concourse. There are several rooms for feeding and changing babies, in some of the toilet facilities there are also fold-down changing tables provided.
Restaurants and cafes are situated on level 4 of international departures in the North Terminal. The Avenue area also features a number of smaller eating establishments. Level 4 of the South Terminal houses a number of low cost restaurants. Whilst you will find convenience stores on level 3.

It is situated at Junction 9 of the M23 motorway and on the A23 approximately 28 miles south of London.
