There was an RAF base on the site since 1943, it wasn't until 1966 that the airport opened as a civil operation and very quickly became a
success. Traffic numbers grew and in 1973 the runway was extended to cater for larger aircraft and shortly afterwards BAA purchased the facility from Glasgow
Corporation, building an expanded terminal and greatly raising the potential capacity.
Terminal facilities and passenger numbers continued to grow through the 80's. In the mid 90's the airport was further developed to the point where it could handle aircraft of any size, opening the way for it's use for long haul flights.
The complex is now Scotlands busiest airport with two runways serving over 40 airlines flying to more than 90 destinations.
It is situated 8 miles to the west of Glasgow adjoining the M8 motorway.
