Heathrow Airport
This is the third busiest airport in the World and the busiest in the UK.
Flying started on the site for military purposes during the first World War, but it wasn't until the 40's that the RAF constructed hard runways and by the end of the decade the airport was fully given over for civilian use. In the mid 50's a new terminal was opened together with the tunnel for the main access road. Today there are two main runways running parallel east-west and five terminal buildings. Over 90 airlines fly from the complex to around 170 destinations.
Heathrow is 14 miles to the west of central london off the M4 motorway, near the junction with the M25.
