Liverpool Airport
Flying started on this site in the 30's on a grass landing strip with the first terminal being built at the end of the decade.
Due to it's position on the west coast it was initially used as a base for shuttle flights to Ireland. Used by the military during the war it was not returned to civilian authorities until the 60's. During these years the site was variously called RAF Speke and Speke Airport. It was in this period that the concrete runway earlier laid by the military was extended and permission for night time use granted. In 1986 a new passenger terminal was built.
Budget airlines came to use the facility as a base and there was a huge increase in the number of pasengers handled every year. More recently millions have been spent upgrading the complex into what it is today and the name changed to Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
It is located 5 miles to the southeast of Liverpool city centre and is within easy access of the M53, M56 and M62.
