Manchester Airport
The Airport's history can be traced back to 1928 when a site at Barton, five miles west of the city, became Manchester's first municipal airfield.
However the site had a tendency to become water logged after heavy rain and eventually a new location for flying was found south west of the city and construction began in 1934. The facility was opened in 1938 and was initially called Ringway, In the 1960s a new terminal was built.
Manchester Airport was designated an International Gateway in the 1980's able to handle long haul international flights.
It is now one of the UK's busiest airports. It is the third busiest in Great Britain after the London's Heathrow and Gatwick. One-third of the UK's population lives within 2 hours travel of the complex. It is around a 30 minute drive from the City Centre and the main motorway access is the M56 with a direct link at junction 5.
The facility is home to around 100 tour operators offering passengers over 300 domestic and international destinations.
