Flying started on the site of Newcastle Airport in 1935 from a grass runway.
Initially it was a staging post for scheduled flights between Croydon near London and Perth in Scotland, by the 1950's as a result of flights for package holidays over 5,000 people a year were using it's now hard runway. Passenger numbers continued to increase and further money was spent on improving it's infrastructure. In the 1970's it was upgraded to Regional International Airport status and by the 1980's passenger numbers were exceding one million. Since then there has been considerable further development and the facility now accomodates close to four million passengers a year.
It is 7 miles to the north west of the city centre. It is adjacent to the A696 which is off the A1. Newcastle Central is the closest train station which is linked to the airport by bus, metro and taxi.
