Stansted Airport
The facility is situated 35 miles from Central London to the north west, at junction 8 of the M11 and it's joining with the A120. The Airport takes its name
from the nearby Essex village of Stansted Mountfitchet. It was built by the U.S. Army in 1942 as a bomber base. The runway was extended in 1954 for
a possible transfer to NATO but this didn't happened and the long runway made the site suitable for an international civil airport.
The first civil terminal was opened in 1969 and then in 1986, work began on the main terminal that exists today. The dramatic glass facades of the terminal lend a transparency to the building which made it unique amongst Britain’s aiviation architecture. This design provides maximum visibility of the operations to the passengers.
Over 40 airlines serving 160 destinations, with over 20 million passengers passing through the facility every year. There is a good range of services for passengers including ATM's, Bureau de change, shops and places to eat. For those choosing to travel by rail there are frequent trains to London's Liverpool Street Station.
